B.I.S.H.O.P
Broadband IP Systems Hotspots for On-the-go People makes good use of the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) technology, and operates on the 802.11b and 802.11g Wi-Fi standards. Wi-Fi runs on a 2.4 GHz frequency band that is capable of near-cable download and upload speeds. Data transfer varies from 11-54 Megabits per second (Mbps) depending on the wireless LAN card or the number of online users.
Access points or hotspots were installed at the library, pavilion, the President's office, west lobby and at the DOiT Control Room. The range of a Wi-Fi hotspot is 100 meters radially, though barriers may lessen the range to some degree.
Mapua students, faculty members and employees can avail of the service after their computer has been configured by the DOiT personnel. Internet browsing is initially free until November 26. Thereafter, rental fee for the wireless connection is pegged at P5.00 - P10.00 per hour. Rental of wireless LAN cards is also an option.
DOIT is also looking into utilizing Bluetooth technology for other student-related applications since Bluetooth is becoming more common on mobile phones.
